I’ve heard a lot of arguments both for and against having a student count words during a story. Some argue that it detracts from the student’s learning because they’re not listening to the whole story. In my opinion, I like having a Word Counter for a couple of different reasons. The first is that it helps my ADD/ADHD students focus. The second reason I like it is that it tells me which words I am saying enough, and which words I kind of forgot.
The problem I’m running into is that in some classes I need to vary who is counting words, based on their daily energy level. As a result, these students don’t seem to understand the process as well. It seems to take forever to have a student draw 4 boxes and put the word in it…..
….so I made a little form! So far, it’s already helped cut down on the confusion.
